Islands Of Kochi

A guided tour to the Islands of Kochi

The ‘Backwaters of Kerala’ is an institution in itself – the islands, spread across the city of Kochi aka Cochin, have rich treasures to unearth. When your guide takes you through the tour of islands on a houseboat, it’s not just an excursion but a learning experience, too. It’s a close conversation with nature, which is enriching. You get acquainted with various exotic trees, plants, leaves, fruits and all kinds of spices.

Kochi has earned the status of being a seasoned spice trading centre on the Arabian Sea coast way back from the 14th century. The city is vast with mainland Ernakulam, Fort Kochi, the suburbs of Edapally, Kalamassery and Kakkanad to the northeast; Tripunithura to the southeast; and a bunch of islands closely knitted in the Vembanad Lake.

Flora and fauna

The flora of the region is primarily tropical. Common vegetation in the region comprises Launaea, Ipomoea, Spinifex, Lippia, Moniera, Portulaca, Hydrocotyle, Cynodon, Digitari, Cyperus and various others. Mangalavanam is an ecologically driven area, which is a hub for a wide variety of migratory birds. This exceptional ecosystem in the city has helped control Kochi’s pollution and preserve its greenery.

The backwaters are also home to many different types of fishes - Aquatic mammals like dolphins are found in great numbers.

So bookmark this trip in your travel diary and turn back to its pages whenever you want to smell the aroma of a ‘raw-and-beautiful’ voyage.
